DESCRIPTION:The Kenyon Review is hosting their Writers Workshop this summer! Red Hen author Rebecca McClanahan will be instructing on the nonfiction portion July 11-17. eccRead below for information! \n  \nOur summer 2021 workshops take on a new dimension this year. Entirely online\, they are designed to fit more easily into writers’ daily lives\, all while providing the stimulating and supportive experience that writers seek from Kenyon Review. Three different options are available for each genre\, during both sessions (June and July): \nThe Finn Workshop*: The most rigorous\, interactive option\, the Finn Workshop is ideal for writers seeking an intensive\, small-group experience supplemented by an individualized\, one-on-one meeting with the instructor. This option also includes small group conversations with visiting editors and exclusive green room access to special guest authors. \nThe Bexley Workshop*: This option provides the rigor of the small-group workshop combined with opportunities to interact with a community of writers\, through open mic sessions and the writers cafe\, a communal online space for writing in the company of others. \nThe Rosse Event Series: The most flexible option\, the Rosse Event Series provides enrichment and insights through readings and conversations with faculty (including Kaveh Akbar\, David Baker\, Angie Cruz\, Geeta Kothari\, Dinty W. Moore\, Carl Phillips\, Natalie Shapero\, Nancy Zafris\, and more). Participants can experience the events synchronously or access them asynchronously until September 1. \n*Note: Participants in the Finn and Bexley Workshops have access to the entire Rosse Event Series. \nOur faculty members are talented writers and teachers of national renown. They have advanced degrees in creative writing and are accomplished\, active members of the literary community. \nSession I Instructors (June 20–26)\nFiction: Angie Cruz or Ira Sukrungruang\nNonfiction: T Kira Madden or Dinty W. Moore\nPoetry: Gabrielle Calvocoressi or Carl Phillips\nSpiritual Writing: Kaveh Akbar or Jamie Quatro \nSession II Instructors (July 11–17)\nFiction: E.J. Levy\, Nick White\, or Nancy Zafris with Karin Lin-Greenberg\nNonfiction: Geeta Kothari or Rebecca McClanahan\nPoetry: David Baker\, Dan Beachy-Quick\, Shara McCallum\, or Natalie Shapero \nThe Finn and Bexley Workshops center around a daily 90-minute\, small-group experience offered synchronously via Zoom. Many of the other enrichment opportunities associated with each workshop are asynchronous. A complete schedule is available on each genre workshop page. \n\nFor more information visit:\nhttps://kenyonreview.org/writers-online/

SUMMARY:NEH Reading and Conversation Series: Jason Schneiderman and Ellen Bass
DESCRIPTION:Streamed live on redhen.org\, facebook.com/redhenpress\, and youtube.com/redhenpressbeats \nContinuing our poetry lecture and conversation series are Jason Schneiderman and Ellen Bass\, moderated by Douglas Manuel\, on the queer voice in poetry\, and the topic of subverting the form\, and subverting the language in Formalist poetry. \nWith the support of the National Endowment for the Humanities\, Red Hen Press is proud to bring a unique lecture and conversation series to the public\, focusing on the history and future of formalism in poetry.  \nThe unifying thread of this conversation series is exploring formalist poetry and the role it plays in our culture as poetry continues to evolve. Why do we as readers and listeners to poetry continue to love the sound and rhythm of formal poetry? Why does it create a kind of heartbeat for us?  \nOur series is organized with a movement from the traditional to the contemporary\, bringing in diverse experiences and voices. Speakers will discuss poetry’s formal foundation and how teaching these building blocks allows for growth. In order for young people to do experimental poetry\, they have to know what rules to break; to play with form\, they have to know what form is. In poetry\, traditional forms are the way we learn technique. If poetry were dance\, form is ballet.

SUMMARY:NEH Reading and Conversation Series: Victoria Chang and Afaa Weaver
DESCRIPTION:Continuing our poetry lecture and conversation series are Victoria Chang and Afaa Weaver\, with conversation moderated by Kate Gale\, on bending the rules of Formalism. \nStreamed live on redhen.org\, facebook.com/redhenpress\, and youtube.com/redhenpressbeats
