SUMMARY:A Walking & Reading Tour with Author Ellen Meeropol
DESCRIPTION:Join local author Ellen Meeropol on a walk and talk around the former Northampton State Hospital and the Village Hill neighborhood\, the setting and inspiration for her new novel. The Lost Women of Azalea Court begins one November morning\, when 88-year-old Iris Blum goes missing from a fictional six-bungalow development on the grounds of the long-closed hospital\, where her husband was the last head psychiatrist. Their daughter\, the neighbors\, and police detective McPhee suspect Dr. Blum of being involved in Iris’s disappearance and dig into his past. The neighbors\, family\, and detective narrate this story together\, uncovering ghosts\, secrets\, and lies. \nAt historical landmarks\, the group will hear short scenes from the novel set in those places\, and think together about the challenge of both honoring our local history and telling a good story.\n\nEllen is the author of five novels\, including Her Sister’s Tattoo and Kinship of Clover. She lives in the Village Hill neighborhood. Books can be pre-ordered through the Broadside Bookshop and will be signed after the walk.

SUMMARY:A Conversation and Celebration with Lisa Greer and Kate Gale
DESCRIPTION:Red Hen Press is pleased to announce a celebration of Philanthropy Revolution: How to Inspire Donors\, Build Relationships\, and Make a Difference\, by philanthropist\, entrepreneur\, convener\, Lisa Greer. The book– the first and only book on philanthropy and the nonprofit sector written from a donor perspective– sounds the alarm on what Lisa sees as an endemic problem among charitable organizations: fundraising tactics that are illogical\, irritating\, ineffective\, and that hold back the sector’s progress. Lisa will briefly read from Philanthropy Revolution\, and then join in conversation with Red Hen Press’ co-founder and Managing Editor Kate Gale. Hors d’oeuvres and refreshments to follow. We can’t wait to see you at Red Hen Press’ headquarters in Pasadena to hear Lisa detail her mission to “Save Giving” – and why an optimized nonprofit sector is so incredibly important in shaping the future.  \n \nClick here for more information on Lisa Greer and Philanthropy Revolution. \n\nDisclaimer: This event was originally scheduled for May 18\, 2022\, but was rescheduled due to unforeseen (non-COVID-related) circumstances.\n \nABOUT PHILANTHROPY REVOLUTION:\n\nIn the first book on philanthropy written from a donor’s perspective\, businesswoman and philanthropist Lisa Greer lifts the lid on our charitable sector\, with an authentic account that describes exactly how outdated the sector has become and why it’s at risk of collapse. \n \n\nWeaving in her story of instant wealth and philanthropy\, Lisa showcases the latest research\, as well as dozens of interviews with donors\, nonprofit professionals and leading academics in the field. She also provides much-needed ethical solutions that apply to any business\, including: \n• Upfront ways to ask for money\n• Effective communications strategies\n• Ways to be transparent from the outset\n• How to curate meaningful events \nPhilanthropy Revolution is the handbook all fundraisers\, nonprofits and donors should be using to create trusting\, authentic partnerships that can be sustained long-term. Philanthropy is changing dramatically and it needs nothing short of an intervention to succeed. In this book\, Lisa Greer shows us how to ‘save giving’ by providing a clear path to success. With her help\, the nonprofit world will see its donors energized\, its charities better supported and its impact increased\, all while building a more honest philanthropic culture.

I couldn’t put it down.”—Monica Drake\, author of Clown Girl and The Stud Book \n“Explores the ordinary ways our lives can go terribly wrong despite our best intentions. In their often-hilarious attempts to find common ground\, Zalkow’s characters navigate self-sabotage\, second chances\, and the complicated fluid definition of family in the twenty-first century.”—Margaret Malone\, author of People Like You (winner of the Balcones Fiction Prize and a finalist for the PEN/Hemingway Award) \n“A refreshingly zany story about the pitfalls of modern technology and the importance of chasing dreams.” — Kirkus Reviews \nAbout I Only Cry with Emoticons\nI Only Cry with Emoticons is a quirky comedy that reveals the cost of being disconnected—even when we’re using a dozen apps on our devices to communicate—and an awkward man’s search for real connections\, on and offline. \nSaul doesn’t get why he’s misunderstood. At his high-tech day job\, he hides in the bathroom writing a novel about his dead grandfather and wonders why his boss wants to fire him. He tells his almost ex-wife about a blind date and wonders why she slams the door in his face. He aches with worry for his seven-year-old son\, who seems happier living with his mom and her new man. \nWhen the blind date becomes a complicated relationship\, and Saul’s blunders at work threaten the survival of the company\, Saul has to wake up and confront his fears. \nI Only Cry with Emoticons is a quirky comedy that reveals the cost of being disconnected—even when we’re using a dozen apps on our devices to communicate—and an awkward man’s search for real connections\, on and offline. \nAbout Yuvi Zalkow\nYuvi Zalkow is the author of the novel\, A Brilliant Novel in the Works (MP Publishing 2012). SUMMARY:Diane Thiel and Carl Marcum Discussion\, Reading\, and Q&A
DESCRIPTION:Red Hen Press has teamed up with Lost City Bookstore in Washington\, D.C. for a virtual event series in 2022! \nJoin us in welcoming Diane Thiel and Carl Marcum as they discuss their collections of poetry Questions from Outer Spaceand A Camera Obscura! \nAbout Questions from Outer Space : \nCompelling poems with brave\, insightful\, often humorous observations of the world. \nDiane Thiel’s eagerly anticipated collection of poems\, Questions from Outer Space\, explores fresh and often humorous perspectives that capture the surreal quality of our swiftly changing lives on this planet. The poems travel through questions on many fronts\, challenging assumptions and locating unique angles of perception. This thought-provoking book reflects a deep engagement with the natural world\, a questioning of our built systems\, the expansive wilderness of parenting\, and the complexities of navigating outer and inner space. \nAbout A Camera Obscura : \nFrom the edge of a singularity and across desert roads at night\, A Camera Obscura teleports its readers through deep space nebulae and the constructs of cityscapes to arrive at what it means to “see.” Lovers embrace in sonnets and meditations move through artworks and Hubble Telescope images as these poems employ ekphrastic visions to balance the profound displacements in the most mundane aspects of our lives with science\, fact\, faith\, and song. In the ceremonial blades of Aztec sacrifice and the anonymity of undocumented lives\, these poems accrete into a solar system of images seen true\, seen askance\, seen in error\, seen entire. A Camera Obscura is the dark room of the imagination where sīgnum–the sign\, the act–becomes the tangible testaments of living. \n*** \nDiane Thiel is the author of eleven books of poetry and nonfiction\, including Echolocations and Resistance Fantasies. Thiel’s work has appeared in Poetry\, The Hudson Review\, The Hopkins Review\, and numerous other publications. Her awards include a PEN Award\, the Nicholas Roerich Prize\, and a Fulbright. Thiel received her undergraduate and graduate degrees from Brown University and has traveled and lived in Europe\, South America\, Asia\, and Australia\, working on literary and environmental projects. She is Regents’ Professor of English and Associate Chair at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque and lives in the Sandia Mountain foothills. \nCarl Marcum is a Chicano poet from Tucson\, Arizona. He is the author of the collection Cue Lazarus\, and his poems have appeared in the anthologies The Wind Shifts: New Latino Poetry and Latinx Rising: An Anthology of Latinx Science Fiction & Fantasy. He received his MFA from the University of Arizona and was a Wallace Stegner Fellow at Stanford University. Marcum has been awarded fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts\, the Illinois Arts Council\, and the Taos Writers Conference. He served as a Canto Mundo Fellow from 2011–2015. Marcum taught for many years at DePaul University in Chicago and now lives in Pittsburgh\, Pennsylvania\, where he is the managing director of a small engineering and environmental consulting firm in the Marcellus Shale. \nQuestions from Outer Space and A Camera Obscura will be available at Lost City Books!
