Development & Grant Writing Internship


Development internships are intended for qualified applicants seeking hands-on experience in fundraising, nonprofit development, and/or public relations. The Development intern works closely with the Development Coordinator to maintain grant and donor relations and to research and cultivate new relations.

What you’ll do

  • research potential new sources of funding
  • draft, proofread, and submit grant proposals and letters of intent (LOIs)
  • assist with Red Hen’s outreach programs, particularly Writing in the Schools
  • create and edit materials to help solicit support for the press
  • maintain and update development databases
  • provide general Development support such as data entry, filing, scanning, mailing, and other administrative duties as needed

Applicants should also meet these additional requirements:

  • able to commit to 16–24 hours per week for 4–6 months
  • have completed at least two years of an undergraduate degree program
  • have excellent written and verbal communication skills, a meticulous attention to detail, a self-starting attitude, the ability to maintain deadlines and work efficiently without close supervision in a fast-paced environment
  • able to work both independently and collaboratively
  • have computer literacy, particularly with Microsoft Office and Windows 7 and 10
  • previous experience in nonprofit fundraising and/or publishing preferred but not required

Internship benefits

In addition to gaining relevant, department-specific experience and potential work samples, all interns are eligible to participate in: free workshops and presentations on various topics taught by our experienced staff; an intern luncheon and Q&A with our Managing Editor and Publisher; and Red Hen readings and events. Interns also receive complimentary books and course credit (if applicable).
