Mason’s achievements in verse narratives surpass those of other Expansive Poets, spanning multiple subgenres. His best early short-stories in verse are the tetrameter poems “Gusev” and “The Next Place” and his enduring blank-verse dramatic monologues “Spooning” and “Blackened Peaches.” Ludlow (2007), a historical novel in blank verse, tells the story of the 1914 massacre of immigrant miners in rural Colorado. Mason has also written full-length opera libretti adaptations of The Scarlet Letter (2008) and Ludlow (2012), as well as two accomplished one-act libretti for chamber opera: After Life (2015) and The Parting (2019). To date, Mason has published eight poetry books comprised of both lyric and narrative poems written in both formal and free verse.
