In his latest novel (following An Artist’s Legacy), Ha returns to a 20th-century postwar Vietnam setting, the same setting and time he deployed in earlier fictional works, notably The Demon Who Peddled Longing and Mrs. Rossi’s Dream. Ha’s signature lyricism is evident, lending emotional depth to Khang’s intimate story of his 15-year ordeal, endured and shared by thousands of other prisoners.
