Goebel, a recovering addict with a long rap sheet of alcohol- and drug-related arrests, spent years living in cars, on street corners and in motels in San Francisco’s North Beach neighborhood. It was also where he spent a lot of time at City Lights Bookstore, reading and daydreaming about publishing his own work.
