For years, Red Hen Press has made a steadfast commitment to poetry, publishing 8 to 10 collections each year and nurturing a vibrant community of writers and readers. We have had the honor of publishing renowned poets at different stages of their careers, including Afaa Weaver, Percival Everett, Maggie Smith, Brenda Cárdenas, Eleanor Wilner, and Brynn Saito. As we enter our fourth decade, our commitment to poets is stronger than ever.
But poetry requires support.
Unlike prose, poetry does not generate the revenue needed to sustain its own production. And yet it is often the art form that most urgently tells the truth of a moment, builds literary community, and provides language for our experiences.
To continue prioritizing the work of new and established poets, our poetry program must be funded at $100,000 annually. This baseline keeps the program alive, supporting editorial work, production, and distribution. Additional funding will allow us to expand our efforts in marketing, media, events, award submissions, and other endeavors that will support our poets and their collections in the long term.
